Joe Saunders’ Night

07/01/2010

So, I don’t know if you know or not, Angels Starting Pitcher, Joe Saunders, is a heck of a guy.  CIMG3412It was Joe Saunders Bobble head night last night at Angel Stadium.  Joe Saunders and his wife purchased more than 200 tickets, along with custom t-shirts with their own money and donated them to CHOC hospital.  Apparently, he does this a several times a year, and apparently, he did not get the memo that professional athletes are supposed to be spoiled, self-important jerks.

Seriously, it’s a great thing he does for a great cause.  Children’s Hospital of Orange County will not turn any kid away.  I’ve heard numbers of stories about the great care they’ve given kids, but since I fall into that self-important jerk category (sans the athlete ledger), I can’t remember any.  So you’ll have to check out some of the great work they do here http://www.choc.org/, become a Facebook fan here http://www.facebook.com/chocchildrens and see CHOC by the numbers here.  And if you are feeling especially magnanimous (like Joe), there’s a donate tab on the home page.

I would have pictures from the field, but I don’t…  I’ll let Joe tell you why.

We did get some footage from the stands.

So Joe Saunders is a heck of a guy.  On the other hand, Angel defector, Vladimir Guerrero, who hit two home runs, including the go-ahead grand slam, is a jerk (not really, but kind of).

Go Angels. Go CHOC. Thanks Joe.

All well said. Joe and CHOC are awesomeness. I love hearing (and reading) stories like this. With all the typical athlete attitude out there, it’s great to see there are still some good guys who love the game and giving back to their community.

A heck of a pitcher, though wins are down this year. Here’s hoping the second half is good to one of the good guys.
